I'm not so sure a 2 year deal towards UFA status shows a desire to stay long term....but the dollar amount is decent.

5.6 per is Nurse taking less???
I watch the Oil quite a bit and I have to say I don’t think Nurse is worth that at all. A second pairing guy who can play physical but tends to give the puck away a lot.
I would have figured a short term deal that walks him to UFA would have been low 4’s. |

You're forgetting Ken Holland is the GM. Take the perceived value and instantly add 1-2 million to it. |

Nurse has never really lived up to the billing
$5.6 Million is a lot for this type of player
He was expected to "be the guy"
so far...not so much |

Agreed. If Nurse was an UFA and a team signed him to the same contract I would cringe a bit, but as a RFA?
Personally I think teams are just throwing money on contracts until the CBA expires and the owners are going to demand rollbacks on salaries. Expansion and a new tv deal isn't enough if this spending spree continues where mediocre players are getting huge increases, looking at you Flyers and Comcast.... |

What we see here is a desire by Nurse to stay an Oiler for a long time.
-snip-
While Nurse did take less money this deal does lead him right into his first year as a UFA. - Eklund
I see a disconnect here. |

I'm torn on this one...
I think 5.6 is too much for him at this time, but if he were a free agent right now, teams would be throwing so much more money at him than that. Dmen like Nurse are very hard to come by, warts and all. I'm going to say that I like the deal. |

Could be a sign and trade scenario.
Leafs wanted him under 6 for whomever they're sending back. |

Its not completely his fault. After such sustained success, this was going to happen eventually. The terrible contracts he gave out don't help, but it is what it is. I personally would have rather seen him do what Yzerman has done and just sink the ship, you need superstars now a days. Go look at the Wings roster though and every bad contract they have, subtract 1-2 million from and you'd be like meh okay that is much more reasonable (at the time of signing).
I mean it took the Oilers how many first overall picks to get it right? |

He's among the top 5-on-5 producers among Dmen in the league (10th in 5-on-5 pts since 2017-18; 25th in 5-on-5 pts/60 since 2017-18), consistently outperforms his team goal share despite playing in comparable minutes to the rest of the top-4 and- aside from Benning- his contribution to McDavid's dominance is the greatest among regular Dmen.
Not only is he worth 5.6mil, he would've been worth the 6.5 he would've gotten on a long term deal- particularly when you factor in cap growth. Getting him on this contract is to open up that extra ~1mil this offseason to help the team get through the next couple years of cap difficulties. |

How does a two year bridge deal show the rest of the league that players want to stay there long term? |

According to Bobby Mac, signing the 2 year bridge was to help through the next couple of years where there are cap issues, and we will see his huge extension added. I like Nurse, but I worry about what the $'s will be on said extension. |

Fair money for a true second pairing d-man who is forced to play in the top pairing due to the Oilers thin defense. |

If I'm to believe anything I read on hockey forums, Nurse taking a deal that walks him to free agency means he's going home as a free agent. Good news for Hamilton, they'll finally get their team! |

You want to give him even more $? Chiarelli is that you?
Instead of just reading a stat sheet, try watching some games. Hows Kris Russell doing?
Anyone can make a 6 foot pass in their own end, watch Mcdavid go end-to-end and rack up assists.
The truth is Nurse does very little to threaten offensively. He’s a half decent defender who gives up the puck a lot and he can hit and fight.
On a team that’s been starving for good D for a decade, they’ll do anything to keep half decent ones around.

This is always the arguments your type make. Why is it so beyond your ability to fathom that people can evaluate players by statistical measure AND still watch hockey?
Russell has actually been doing mostly fine.

And yet Nurse outproduces both Klefbom and Bear who have a better league-wide reputation offensively. That's not to say I think he's an elite offensive Dman or anything- the bar is pretty low for offensive D in Edmonton.
However, if you're gonna raise the argument that anyone can do it, then why don't we apply the same standard to the Dmen behind the most effective scoring lines in the league? Are we going to dock points from Krug because he plays behind perhaps the most dominant line in the league? How about the Leafs D? Do they get their points docked because they play behind a deep and talent forward corps that does most of the offensive work for them? McDavid doesn't produce a uniquely dominant amount of offense; he creates said offense in a uniquely dominant fashion.

He's certainly not a strong attacker in that his offensive skills are pretty average, but whatever he's doing is leading to better results with McDavid than what his fellow Dmen do (other than Benning). Whether you like to admit it or not, it's the truth.

This is a partial influence I'm sure. On the note of (not) retaining solid Dmen, I compare him to where Petry was before being traded by the Oil. A smooth skating, big-bodied but flawed Dman with a tendency for defensive gaffes and an offensive game with no standout skills, but who produced despite that. He ended up signing for 5.5mil which- when translated to the current cap environment- would be around 6.3mil if I recall the math correctly. It's that contract and Morrissey's that act as the framework for my proposed long term cap number. |
